  First Congress of the Forum of Researchers on the Arab and Muslim World  
  Atención Date of the face-to-face sessions of the Congress: March 17-19, 2005  
     
 

Social Science Research on the Arab and Muslim World has undergone an important growth over the last years. The greater number of researchers, the diversity of departments, fields of knowledge, universities and institutions that are involved demand contact and coordination. FIMAM was created to provide this contact, and its continued success has shown the need of its consolidation. For this reason, we decided to organize the First Congress of the Forum of Researchers on the Arab and Muslim World, aiming to promote debate, and dissemination of research and knowledge generated.

  
 
We believe that we are getting to a point where the theses we have read, and those still in progress, are sufficient to justify a congress enabling us to learn about and discuss the research taking place, thus facilitating interdisciplinary contact. The objective of this first contact is to establish the state of research of the Arab and Muslin World in Spain, and that is the reason why the panels are broadly-based and try to include all possible areas.
  
 

This congress will also be open to foreign researchers who wish to present their papers and, specially, it aims to facilitate contact and knowledge with the participation of researchers from IREMAM, in Aix en Provence, one of the most prestigious centers of investigation on such areas in France.

 
 
A different dimension of the congress is dissemination of knowledge and research among students and people interested in it. Nowadays there is a great interest in the Arab and Muslim World, as proved by the growing number of publications, academic subjects, courses, conferences, seminars dedicated to the Arab and Muslim World. The congress may help disseminate the work done and enable students to approach research in these fields, leaving a door open to new generations.
  
 
The basic objectives of the Congress are:
  
 
  • To start a permanent debate among researchers on the Arab and Muslim World from a Social Science approach.
  • To establish contact among researchers in different fields of knowledge.
  • To promote dissemination of research and knowledge generated by Social Science.
  • Consolidate the thematic network of the Forum of Researchers on the Arab and Muslim World (FIMAM).
 
 
The First Congress of FIMAM is not limited to the members of the Forum, but is open to anyone interested, and will be held in cooperation with the following institutions:
